Vocalist Rockell Scott’s interest in music performance took an early start with piano and vocal performance in her hometown of Brevard, N.C., at the age of nine. She performed frequently at local events in succeeding years and counts among the highlights singing for former President Gerald R. Ford during his visit to Brevard College. Rockell was a touring vocalist with the United States Air Force Band of Mid-Amercia stationed at Scott AFB, Illinois. She is a frequent vocalist in Western North Carolina and also serves in a musical capacity at her local church. She was recently featured at The Jazz Standard in New York City with jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut and his trio. Rockell makes her home in Asheville with her two children.
Rockell Scott’s rich vocal style is naturally gospel tinged. As she delves deeper into the world of jazz, a beautifully soulful combination of the two is emerging. One thing that enhances her singing is the fact that she is a wonderful pianist as well. Classically trained, her mother required that she transpose her classical repertoire into every key! With her rich chord voicings, she accompanies herself in the tradition of Shirley Horn, Blossom Dearie and Dena DeRose.
Truly entertaining, a performance by Rockell will leave you with a big smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart.
